Rising International spreads hope and dignity by selling crafts made by women living in the poorest and most dangerous places in the world. The majority of women working at MamAfrica come from rural eastern Congo, where violence and terrorism have forced them to flee their homes. Due to the high number of sexual attacks against women in this region, in 2010 the U.N. declared this area “the worst place on the planet to live as a woman”. In addition to vocational training, these women are receiving training in holistic trauma healing, financial management, literacy, and maternal/child health. Through the creative art of sewing, these women now have a safe haven where they can come together to collaborate in creating their new community.
