Coffee Drinkers–this one’s for you….
If you’re like many of my clients, you might be confused about caffeine and your health. We hear conflicting viewpoints: coffee and tea are good sources of antioxidants and can prevent certain diseases-true. At the same time, caffeine is dehydrating and can negatively impact your sleep-also true.
So, the issue isn’t whether caffeine is healthy or not, but rather, is caffeine healthy for YOU?
The American Medical Association suggests that 100–200 mg of caffeine (1 or 2 cups of coffee) is safe for most people, but in reality, you could be sensitive to less. Sensitivity to caffeine increases as we age—meaning someone who never had a problem with caffeine can find that it affects them differently as their hormones begin to shift. Caffeine can heighten symptoms associated with menopause and peri-menopause, like anxiety, mood swings, hot flashes, heart palpitations, and insomnia.
Here’s the catch: In order for you to know how caffeine is affecting you, you’ve got to remove it long enough to tune into your body.
GULP! Because caffeine is addictive, removing it, even for a short time, can be a real source of anxiety. And that should be a red flag–in my opinion, it isn’t good when any food or drink has control over us. So, instead of looking at it as deprivation, consider going caffeine free as a gift to your body. It doesn’t have to be forever—even eliminating it for 14 days can help you get back in touch with your body’s natural cycles (30 days is even better!). At that point, you can choose to put that cup of coffee or tea, a huge source of pleasure for many of us, back into your diet because that decision is being made by a healthier, more empowered you.
